about

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way we experience our everyday soundscapes. A number of sound artists take advantage of this situation to go out, hunt for unique sounds and inspire others to do the same. In contrast to that, Roomtones focuses on domestic environments. It prompts the recordist and listener to reflect on the privilege of having a roof over one’s head while calling to rediscover sonic complexions of our homes. This soundscape composition is a result of a call among friends and acquaintances to submit a recording from their home environments.

What this project proved, however, is that the border between the indoor and outdoor is ever more elusive, especially in the context of the pandemic. The reduction of outdoor activities does not make our soundscapes quieter. Quite the opposite, it amplifies those remaining micro-events calling us, listeners, to rethink where the sites and boundaries of aural perception are

While spending her days of social distancing close to nature, Lucía Hinojosa Gaxiola, one of the contributors to the composition, noted that despite being indoors, forest and animal sounds such as thunder, rain, mosquitoes, spiders, scorpions, ants are all present inside: "The only separation is the illusion that we're domestic animals". In Mary Nogacka's contribution we can hear how the prolonged social isolation and restrictions cause unrest and conflicts among people waiting in a line to the store. What's even more intriguing here is the ease with which those sounds today penetrate indoor environments.

All donations from the purchase of the composition resulting from the contributed sounds are transferred to a selected organization supporting homeless people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
